Scientists have identified more than 40 components in ginkgo. So far only two - flavonoids and terpenoids - seem to have medicinal properties.  Flavonoids are plant-based antioxidants that have been shown to protect the nerves, heart muscle, blood vessels, and retina from damage. Terpenoids (such as ginkgolides) are known to improve blood flow. Ginkgo is one of the most studied herbal remedies in the world.  Here are just the most important human studies proving its healing powers.

Increases Concentration Research shows that ginkgo can help combat poor concentration, reverse cognitive decline and and heal fatigue. It’s even useful for helping to treat cerebral insufficiency, condition characterized by chronically low concentration, confusion, decreased physical performance, fatigue, headaches and mood changes. Many of the brain-boosting ginkgo benefits that researchers have discovered rest on the fact that it’s an effective anti-inflammatory that increases antioxidant activity, lowers oxidative stress and improves circulation, all important factors for maintaining cognitive health. It is proven, that ginkgo has positive impact to person with ADD and ADHD disorders. Cognition, Dementia, and Alzheimer’s Disease Researchers suggested that ginkgo biloba may be use as treatment options for patients with mild or moderate dementia. Ginkgo biloba was used originally to regulate blood flow to the brain. Further studies revealed that it may protect nerve cells damaged by Alzheimer's disease. Many studies reveal that ginkgo biloba can improve memory and thinking in people affected by Alzheimer's or vascular dementia. Memory Enhancement: Ginkgo biloba is popular as a "brain herb." Studies have proven that it can improve memory in people with dementia. Ginkgo biloba is commonly added to nutrition bars, soft drinks, and fruit smoothies to boost memory and enhance cognitive performance. Arterial Disease: Ginkgo biloba can improve pain-free walking times for patients with intermittent claudication. Macular Degeneration: It is a progressive, degenerative eye disease that impairs the retina. It is one of the most common causes of blindness. The flavonoids found in ginkgo biloba may help alleviate some retinal problems like visual field damage. Migraines: an Italian study found that Ginkgolide B, a constituent of ginkgo biloba, was effective as a preventative treatment in reducing migraine frequency and lowered the need for migraine medications.
